At our school, we have been using a closed caption system on a video screen at a graduation ceremony and an entrance ceremony since 1998 in order to provide information support for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. However, a limitation was that we could not include the readings on the subtitles owing to its low resolution, as the system was based on an analogue TV device. Initially, we made use of a subtitle editor for home-made video use. We then gradually renewed our system as technology advanced, and finally adopted a video mixer. However, we still suffered from the low resolution of analogue TV system.
Now we are providing closed captions through the use of a high-definition television (HDTV) subtitle editor and projector as our information support system. This is because the audiovisual equipment compatible with HDTV has become widely available in the consumer products market. Thanks to the HDTV system, we can easily include the readings on the subtitles, and can show sharp and vivid images to the viewers.
